Freebody Park Continues Its History

Newport, RI

Overview

Once home to the Newport Jazz Festival, Freebody Park is steeped in history. Music greats such as BB King, Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, and Bob Dylan have all performed at Freebody Park. Now the park has become the home field for the Salve Regina University Seahawks football and softball teams, as well as the Rogers High School football and softball Vikings.

Traverse worked with the City of Newport and Salve Regina University to develop a public/private partnership for the development of Freebody Park into a multi-use, synthetic turf facility for both the city and the school. Traverse led the design team, working closely with the construction team, to deliver this project on an extremely aggressive schedule. Challenges on the site included a high water table with unsuitable soils. The design team developed a shallow drainage system, with a high-performance turf system. The new 149,000 square-foot facility is equipped with new turf that has a multi-use NCAA football field, NCAA softball field, and NFHS softball field.

Traverse assisted the design team through an aggressive construction schedule to meet the client’s athletic needs with limited disruption. Traverse participated in numerous committee meetings and has facilitated discussions regarding design and construction.
