Karen Strive Equestrian Center Expands

Wellesley, MA

Overview

Building on the Karen Stives ’68 Equestrian Center's success, Traverse assisted Dana Hall in the expansion of its outdoor riding facility. The goal was to provide a high-quality riding surface that would dramatically improve the school's riding program and assist in its future competitive success. Previously the school's existing outdoor riding facility was grossly undersized and additional paddock spaces were needed.

The new entry progression to the facility created a sequence of thresholds including columns, which created visual connections from the newly renovated stables through the paddocks and on to the new riding ring. The design was carefully integrated into the hillside, creating a 185’ x 200’ riding ring and staging area through the use of a series of walls, stairs and ramps. Materials were carefully selected to maintain the farm-like quality of the facility, including a three-rail fence, stone walls, landscaping and a Hornbeam hedge.
