Creating A Premier Dining Spot

Newport, RI

Overview

Castle Hill Inn is a luxury hotel situated on a historic 40-acre estate overlooking Narragansett Bay. The Owners selected Traverse Landscape Architects to participate in the design/build of a new outdoor dining expansion.

This new dining area was proposed to be built within the confines of the existing outdoor eating space. The design had to take into consideration both steep terrain and the presence of ledge while creating as little disturbance as possible to the surrounding landscape.

Traverse designed a patio space terraced into three different levels to accommodate the steeply sloping grade below. These terraces are separated by sets of large granite steps and planters filled with ornamental grasses and perennials. The seating area is surrounded by low seat walls with granite veneer and solid bluestone caps. Together as a system, the stone wall edges, bluestone paving, ornamental grasses, and lawn enhance this new premier dining experience along the Narragansett Bay.
